GospeLive Productions Salute & Celebrates the Black Church During Black History Month
GospeLive Productions Salute & Celebrates the Black Church During Black History Month
GospeLive Productions Salutes & Celebrates the Black Church During Black History Month During Black History Month February is a time set aside to honor African-Americans, who have made contributions in the United States and around the world. During Black History Month, there is a greater awareness of the achievements and successes of African-American individuals and organizations. Not forgotten among these successes should be the great contributions black churches have made to African Americans, our nation, and the world. Before there were African-American mayors, governors, or even an African-American President, black churches received leadership from African-American Sunday School teachers, deacons, and pastors. These church leaders, along with others, were seen as community leaders, who helped mentor, educate, and counsel many in the black community. Moreover, the black church was not only a place of worship, but served the community as a center for gathering support and encouraging one another through fellowship. The Civil Rights Movement gained significant strength because of the participation of black churches. They became meeting centers for the organization and strategic planning of the effort for equal rights. Regular church members, church lay leaders, and pastors took a position at the forefront of the work to change a racial and ethnically segregated America. Black churches should be celebrated for their part in influencing a nation to respect and value ethic and racial rights. Black churches also influenced today's American art and music cultures. Musical genres, such as gospel, rhythm and blues, jazz, and even urban can trace their musical roots to black spiritual music. The traditions of music as well as drama in the black church are credited as catalysts for a great number of African-American actors, musicians, and singers. Along with music, the rich oral tradition of storytelling and distinctive African language patterns have been kept and maintained among many African-American churches. Today, black churches are positioned to continue their contribution to American culture at a wider and deeper level. With the growing number of immigrant families moving into traditional black communities and increased mixed marriages between different ethnicities, black churches have lunged into serving a diverse urban congregation. Their makeup extends beyond African-Americans and exemplifies the same melting-pot pattern of our country. Black churches continue to be a place where the community gathers to help and support one another, without regard to their ethnic background. Moreover, a great number of African-Americans are going beyond their community and are actively involved as missionaries around the world. Every year the number of African-American missionaries increases. They spread the gospel to people in other nations as well as share their African-American cultural experiences. Black History Month cannot be celebrated without noting the great contributions of black churches. No matter what the cause, event, or activity may be – civil rights, the arts, or evangelism – God has used the experiences of the black church to influence America. The leaders and staff at LifeWay continue to support and pray for what God is doing in black churches and that He will continue to move in mighty ways to impact the world for His Kingdom. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. KING!!! HIS LEGACY TO JAZZ
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. KING!!! HIS LEGACY TO JAZZ

When I think about Martin Luther King, rarely, if at all do I think of him in a jazz context. However, several years ago, when word of MLK's opening remarks at the 1964 Berlin Jazz Festival began to circulate, MLK and Jazz became top of mind for  jazz "apprecianados" everywhere. Wow..it was truly amazing; speech. Thanks to some painstaking research by saxophonist David Demsey and drummer Bruce Jackson,  under the auspices of William Patterson University, the true origin and nature of King's speech has been revealed. Read the full transcript of his 1964 Berlin Jazz Festival Address below.

God has wrought many things out of oppression. He has endowed his creatures with the capacity to create—and from this capacity has flowed the sweet songs of sorrow and joy that have allowed man to cope with his environment and many different situations.Jazz speaks for life. The Blues tell the story of life's difficulties, and if you think for a moment, you will realize that they take the hardest realities of life and put them into music, only to come out with some new hope or sense of triumph.

This is triumphant music.

Modern jazz has continued in this tradition, singing the songs of a more complicated urban existence. When life itself offers no order and meaning, the musician creates an order and meaning from the sounds of the earth which flow through his instrument. It is no wonder that so much of the search for identity among American Negroes was championed by Jazz musicians. Long before the modern essayists and scholars wrote of racial identity as a problem for a multiracial world, musicians were returning to their roots to affirm that which was stirring within their souls.

Much of the power of our Freedom Movement in the United States has come from this music. It has strengthened us with its sweet rhythms when courage began to fail. It has calmed us with its rich harmonies when spirits were down.

And now, Jazz is exported to the world. For in the particular struggle of the Negro in America there is something akin to the universal struggle of modern man. Everybody has the Blues. Everybody longs for meaning. Everybody needs to love and be loved. Everybody needs to clap hands and be happy. Everybody longs for faith.  In music, especially this broad category called Jazz, there is a stepping stone towards all of these.

Dr. Martin Lurther King Jr.

GOSPELIVE PRODUCTIONS: SALUTES THE QUEEN OF SOUL, ARETHA FRANKLIN
GOSPELIVE PRODUCTIONS: SALUTES THE QUEEN OF SOUL, ARETHA FRANKLIN
African-American Music Appreciation Month is a celebration for African American Music every year in the month of June in the United States. It was originally started as Black Music Month by President Jimmy Carter, who on June 7, 1979, decreed that June would be the month of black music. Since then, presidents have announced to Americans to celebrate Black Music Month. For each year of his term, President Barack Obama has announced the observance under a new title, African-American Music Appreciation Month.
Aretha Franklin, a household name the world over, has racked up more awards and accolades than virtually any woman in music history—from the much-coveted Presidential Medal of Freedom to being named one of Time magazine’s most important people of the 20th century.
It would be difficult to overstate the importance of Aretha Franklin in the history of American popular music. The definitive soul singer of the 1960s, Franklin stands beside Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra as one of the few perfect pop voices this country has ever produced. Franklin has often been described as the greatest singer and musician due to her "vocal flexibility, interpretive intelligence, skillful piano-playing, her ear, her experience." Franklin’s instantly recognizable artistic signature—a flawless mezzo-soprano dynamo of blues phrasing, gospel melisma, and pop precision, punctuated by unpredictable two-octave leaps and a deeply sensual, earthy growl—shines like a supernova in a galaxy of mere stars.
Her hit records–'Respect,' 'Think,' 'Chain Of Fools,' 'Daydreaming,' 'A Natural Woman'–– are timeless classics; her 18 GRAMMY Awards, Awards and is one of the best-selling female artists of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide with a multitude of gold and platinum albums and singles, and her induction as the first female artist into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
As a teenager, Franklin toured the gospel circuit with her father, the Reverend C.L. Franklin (a nationally known gospel star and pastor of Detroit’s New Bethel Baptist Church), earning the admiration of gospel legends Mahalia Jackson, the Reverend James Cleveland, and Sam Cooke. In 1960, Aretha graduated to New York City, where she was signed to Columbia Records
In 1966, the triumvirate of Atlantic Records vice president/producer Jerry Wexler presented the world with Aretha Franklin’s virtual blueprints of soul music. By 1968, she was being hailed as “The Queen of Soul” and the personification of the nation’s newfound black pride movement. Martin Luther King presented an award to her, and she graced the cover of Time magazine. By the time the ’60s came to an end, Franklin was a living legend.
By the ’70s, Franklin’s music grew and she managed 10 more #1 R&B hits, including “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Spanish Harlem,” “Day Dreaming,” and “Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do).” The albums Young, Gifted And Black and the gospel extravaganza Amazing Grace (recorded live with her father and the Reverend James Cleveland) found Franklin coming to terms with her own legacy and discovering a fresh direction.
In the ’80s, she was unexpectedly embraced by a new generation through her featured role in The Blues Brothers movie, and on the R&B charts with three more #1s: “Jump To It,” “Get It Right,” and “Freeway Of Love.” She even scored her second Pop #1 with “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” a duet with George Michael.
Honored as the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, Franklin continues to record gospel, soul, and classical music today.
In a recent interview The Queen of Soul stated concerning her career and Presidential Medal of Freedom. “It is ever fabulous. I mean, fabulous. I’ve been so blessed. I’m most thankful for how good God has been to me. When you receive something like the Presidential Medal of Freedom, wow. After God’s grace, I’m so grateful for good friends, loyal fans and the love of the music. I treasure real people and I know the ones who have hung in there with me and I am truly thankful stated Franklin.
During African American Music Month let’s salute The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and her legendary voice that has been declared one of Americas National Treasures.

At age eight, he would dance in front of his idol on the TV screen, as his mother sewed replica costumes. Since then, Carter has professionally impersonated the King of Pop for audiences all across the country. In June 2003, he had the honor to sit down with the King himself, who complimented Carter on his costumes and thanked him. Later that year, he was invited to Neverland Ranch on two separate occasions and met the entire Jackson family. Since then Carter has worked with Madame Tussauds, Guinness and Sony BMG on behalf of Jackson. In April 2009, Carter spent what would be his final moments with Jackson, who autographed his back in black Sharpie. It was permanently tattooed on later that night. Two years ago, Carter attended Jackson’s memorial service at the Staples Center.

Jeffrey Perez (Live Concert Michael) fell in love with Michael Jackson as a small child, mimicking his idol’s dance moves and learning to sing all of his songs. As an adult, he is the number one moonwalking Michael Jackson tribute performer in the world. With his striking resemblance and MJ styled voice that will give you the chills, Perez portrays Michael Jackson like no one else can.

Ivan Kelley (Young Michael) was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1998 and moved as a baby to Atlanta, Georgia. Ivan is a young pop and R&B sensation who is often compared to Michael Jackson and his natural born talent as a musician was apparent at a very early age. By the time he was in middle school, not only was he singing and dancing, he had also learned how to play the drums, piano and guitar. He made his national television debut on the Ellen DeGeneres Show at age eleven where he showed the world his chops as he belted out the Jackson 5 hit “Who’s Loving You”. The following year, Ivan appeared in the Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton movie Joyful Noise singing “That’s the Way God Planned It” and also released his debut album and single Scream (2012). In his role as the young Michael, Ivan will be singing several Jackson 5 favorites like “ABC” and “I’ll Be There”, perfectly capturing the emotion and raw, pure talent Michael displayed.
